Call for AAAS Workshops

Deadline Reached

Career development workshops are aimed at individuals seeking careers in science and engineering and professionals looking to sharpen or supplement their skills.

These workshops are instructional or informational in nature and are markedly different from a scientific session. The target audience is strictly the student or scientist and his/her career. Workshops that go beyond a career development focus are inappropriate and will not be accepted into the program. All workshops are 60 minutes in length; only the workshop title, organizers, and a brief synopsis are published in the program book. The deadline to submit a workshop is Friday, April 29, 2016 at 11:59 pm PT.

1. SELECT WORKSHOP CATEGORY

Please indicate the category that best fits your proposed workshop.

Career Enhancement
Workshops focus on opportunities that are available for students, scientists, or engineers to enhance or augment their careers. Examples include fellowships, internships, international exchange programs, and networking strategies.

Career Management, Resources, and Tools
Workshops focus on resources to help manage careers, whether the goal is to find the right job, navigate grant applications, or publish research. These might include strategies for resume and interview preparation, contract negotiation, financial planning and management, proposal and paper reviewing, staff recruitment and retention, proposal writing, and project or lab management.

Career Pathways
Workshops explore a variety of career choices and routes for people who are pursuing or already have scientific or engineering degrees, whether they are considering career choices or retirement opportunities. Examples include mentoring, options for students or mid-career professionals seeking a change, and the challenges faced by women, minorities, and people with disabilities at all career stages.

Communication Skills
Workshops assist students, scientists, or engineers with communicating about science. Of special interest are those that focus on communicating with diverse audiences, such as journalists, policy-makers, and public audiences; on demonstrating effective uses of communication technologies, such as digital media; and on finding communication opportunities.

Personal Development
Workshops can help students, scientists, or engineers with life and work skills and issues such as assessing their own skills, abilities, and interests; managing dual-career relationships; sustaining a healthy work-life balance; and planning for retirement

2. WORKSHOP INFORMATION

When creating a title, keep in mind that meeting attendees may be more likely to attend a workshop with an interesting title.

Workshop Description

Describe the subject, highlighting the questions, career development issues, or needs to be addressed. How is the workshop relevant to career development? What are the core ideas that will be shared with the audience? In what ways will the audience be involved? This synopsis will appear in the program book.

Identify the intended audience(s) for your workshop. Select all that apply.

  • High School
  • Graduate Student
  • High-School Teacher
  • Program Administrator
  • Mid-Career Scientist
  • Undergraduate
  • Postdoctoral Scholars
  • College and University Faculty
  • Early-Career Scientist
  • Late-Career Scientist

Audience Interest Statement
(Maximum of 2,000 characters with spaces)
How will this workshop assist attendees in achieving their career goals or the goals of those they serve? In what ways will the audience be involved in the workshop?

Printed Materials
(Maximum of 1,000 characters with spaces)

Registration and Travel Support
Workshop presenters (and organizers) attend the AAAS Annual Meeting at their own expense or use funding secured by workshop organizers. By submitting a workshop proposal, organizers agree to register and pay meeting registration fees if the proposal is accepted.

Although AAAS cannot support the costs of travel, a discounted registration rate, which is comparable to the AAAS speaker rate ($110 per person), is available for workshop presenters and organizers.

Audiovisual
All workshop rooms will be equipped with an LCD projector and screen, laptop, a head table for three, one podium microphone, and one table microphone. Arrangements and costs for additional equipment (for example, TV, CD/DVD player, Internet connection, laser pointer, additional microphones) are the responsibility of the organizer and will not be billed to AAAS.

AAAS reserves the right to reconsider the inclusion of a workshop if a substantial change is made to it after being accepted.

3. PARTICIPANT INFORMATION

The workshop coordinator serves as the primary contact for all communications with AAAS. It is the responsibility of the coordinator to disseminate relevant materials to all presenters in their workshop. A workshop can have one (1) coordinator, one (1) co-coordinator, and up to three (3) presenters. Please enter all contact information for each participant and describe what each will present or discuss. Please note that moderators are not permitted for Career Development Workshops. Allow time for audience participation (e.g., Q&A).
