Session Proposal: Velocity Distributions and Kinetic Wave Activity in Space Plasma: Theory, Simulation, and Machine Learning (AGU25)

SH037
Velocity Distributions and Kinetic Wave Activity in Space Plasma: Theory, Simulation, and Machine Learning

Session ID#: 247339

Session Description:
The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Solar Orbiter (SolO) missions provide unprecedented data on solar wind plasma, including ion velocity distribution (VDFs), and ion scale waves. The wealth of data at perihelia from the PSP Solar Probe Analyzer-Ion (SPAN-I) and Electromagnetic Fields Investigation (FIELDS) find unstable non-Maxwellian ion VDFs, complemented with data by SolO Solar Wind Plasma analyzer (SWA) and magnetometer (MAG) farther from the Sun, Fast Plasma Instrument (FPI) onboard the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS) and Wind in the near-Earth environment, resulting in wide observational coverage. These data offer unparalleled opportunity for breakthroughs in plasma physics study of solar wind and space plasma instabilities and heating on kinetic scales. The analysis of corresponding large data sets requires the combined tools of theoretical models, simulations, and machine learning (ML) techniques.  The objective of this session is to bring together experts in these topics and present current advances in the field.
