Mantle Phase Transitions and their Impact on Convection, Evolution, and Interior Structure
Session ID#: 248826
Session Description:
Mineral phase transitions in the mantle impact the dynamics, evolution, and structure of planetary interiors. These transitions—governed by variations in pressure, temperature, and composition—can influence large-scale mantle convection, promote thermal and chemical stratification, and produce seismic discontinuities. However, understanding the dynamic impacts of mineral transitions remains challenging due to uncertainties in phase boundaries, the role of water and volatiles, variations in mineral assemblages, and their effects on physical properties such as rheology and thermal conductivity. This session invites contributions from experimental and computational mineral physics, geodynamics, seismology, and related disciplines to examine how phase transitions influence processes such as plume dynamics, slab stagnation, core–mantle interactions, and the development of large mantle structures.
