Arctic and Antarctica: Geochemical and Geophysical Insights into the Geological Evolution and Climate Feedbacks in Polar and Sub-Polar Regions

Session ID#: 248905

Session Description:
The polar regions offer unique opportunities for geoscientific research, with geochemistry and geophysics crucial for understanding the geological past and predicting future climate impacts. By analyzing chemical signatures in rocks, sediments, ice cores, and ocean waters, geochemists can reconstruct the tectonic evolution and paleoenvironmental conditions of Polar regions. Geochemical data, such as isotopic and elemental tracers, provide insights into the interactions between the cryosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, particularly concerning greenhouse gas dynamics. Geophysical techniques like seismic tomography, magnetotellurics, and radar help reveal subsurface geological formations, ice sheet thickness, and permafrost dynamics. These surveys also detect subglacial lakes and assess ice-bedrock interactions, which are vital for understanding ice sheet stability and sea-level rise. This session invites contributions on geochemical and geophysical approaches, focusing on GHG cycling, permafrost thawing, and carbon and methane release, aiming to enhance our understanding of the polar regions' geological history and their role in climate feedbacks.
