Session Proposal: Outstanding Problems in Caribbean and Central American Tectonics (AGU25)

T014
Outstanding Problems in Caribbean and Central American Tectonics

Session ID#: 249930

Session Description:
Tectonic systems in Central America and the Caribbean are complex and continue to have unresolved problems related to plate drivers, volcanism, history, and seismic hazard. Much of the recorded history and structures are offshore, and in general there is a lack of high-quality, dense geological and geophysical data sets for studying these systems. However, the region holds much promise in terms of advancing our understanding of interactions between tectonic and magmatic systems with surface processes, including 1) what causes along-strike variations in seismic coupling on faults, 2) what is the relationship between plate driving forces (including mantle forces) and surface expressions such as topography, 3) how does volcanism relate to and interact with tectonics, and 4) how does inelastic crustal deformation interact with climate over time to produce landforms? We invite contributions providing new data sets, developing models, as well as both local and synthesis studies in the region.
