Session Proposal: Anthropogenic Impacts on Hydroclimate Processes and Extremes in Cities (AGU25)

H041
Anthropogenic Impacts on Hydroclimate Processes and Extremes in Cities

Session ID#: 249974

Session Description:
Cities are home to the majority of the world’s population. Densely populated urban areas alter hydroclimate and water systems, increasing vulnerability to extreme events. Urbanization modifies precipitation patterns through anthropogenic heat and aerosols, while also intensifying flash floods and disrupting groundwater recharge by replacing natural vegetation with impervious surfaces. These anthropogenic activities reshape the urban water cycle (altering precipitation, evapotranspiration, infiltration, and runoff) and increase the frequency and severity of hydrologic extremes, including heavy rainfall and flash flooding, along with long-term water resource challenges like drought and declining groundwater levels. In response, many cities and countries are exploring nature-based solutions that mitigate urban heat and manage runoff. Our session provides a platform to share observational and modeling studies that 1) advance understanding of urbanization’s impacts on hydrological processes, 2) improve predictions of urban hydrological patterns and extremes, and 3) explore effective mitigation and adaptation strategies to strengthen urban water resilience.
