Subduction Mélanges and their Implications for Convergent Margin Evolution and the Distribution of Slow Slip Events: Insights from Outcrop Data, Modeling, and Geophysics

Session ID#: 250060

Session Description:
Subduction mélanges are complex geological archives that record polycyclic deformation affected by mechanical mixing of materials from different lithospheric domains. The mélanges play a critical role in the mechanical, geochemical, and tectonic evolution of subduction zones, influencing fault behavior, fluid pathways, metamorphism, deformation, and seismic activity, including Slow Slip Events (SSE).This session aims to integrate contributions that explore the role of subduction mélanges at different scales, from field-based geological observations to laboratory experiments, geophysical studies, and numerical models. We welcome presentations that address: Structural, petrological, and geochemical evolution of subduction mélanges; Laboratory and numerical experiments assessing mélange influence on subduction zone dynamics, mechanics, and thermal budgets; Geophysical investigations linking mélange properties to the distribution of SSE and seismic hazards. By fostering a multidisciplinary discussion across disciplines, this session aims to highlight potential links between intrinsic geological characteristics of mélanges and the spatial-temporal distribution of seismic activity in convergent margins.
