The Importance of Climate and Environmental Assessments for Decision-Making in Challenging Times
Session ID#: 250143
Session Description:
Effective development of scientific assessments is critical to ensure science is deployed to tackle ongoing planetary crises. The release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6 Synthesis and Fifth US National Climate Assessment in 2023, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) nexus and transformative change assessments in 2024, the Status of Tribes and Climate Change Volume 2 in early 2025, and other international, national, and sub-national assessments highlights their foundational role in informed decision-making. This is a crucial time to discuss innovations in and future directions for scientific assessments, ranging from advancements in projections and scenarios to centering Indigenous and local knowledge. There are also serious challenges to assessment work, e.g., recent federal disruptions and contentious plenaries for IPCC and IPBES. This panel will highlight the latest in assessment processes at different levels, reflecting on best practices, key considerations, lessons learned, and future directions.
