Session Proposal: Deciphering Fault Slip Dynamics and Earthquake Nucleation Mechanisms in Shallow Crustal Settings through a Physicochemical Perspective (AGU25)

T004
Deciphering Fault Slip Dynamics and Earthquake Nucleation Mechanisms in Shallow Crustal Settings through a Physicochemical Perspective

Session ID#: 250202

Session Description:
The fault slip rate helps in assessing the regional strain accumulation and probabilistic seismic hazards. The recent catastrophic earthquake in the Sagaing fault, Myanmar, was thus predicted by a slip rate relatively higher in its central part (~23 mm/yr) than that in other adjacent parts (~16 mm/yr). However, fault slip behaviour is a complex interplay between the stress impoundment and fault strength. Accordingly, it can be influenced by several chemical processes in fault zones, including fluid-rock interaction, hydrothermal alteration, clay mineralisation, as also reported in Koyna-Warna region in Western India, Alpine fault in New Zealand, Nankai Trough in Japan and the central part of the San Andreas fault in the USA. Hence, this multidisciplinary session welcomes the comprehensive studies on fault slip dynamics in shallow crustal settings through geochemical and mineralogical analyses of the fault zones and measurement of fault slip rate using structural, geomorphological, paleoseismological, geodetic and geochronological methods.
