Advances in Real-time Monitoring and Forecasting of Water quality
Advances in Real-time Monitoring and Forecasting of Water quality
Session ID#: 250720
Session Description:
There is an urgent need to develop tools for providing short- and medium-term forecast of environmental variables such as nitrates, dissolved oxygen, and salinity in aquatic environments. Recent advances in observational methods and monitoring technology, coupled with modeling techniques enable innovative approaches to develop these tools. Such methods are particularly applicable to small catchments that respond rapidly and are sensitive to small variations in conditions. The use of high-resolution models to identify sources of contamination in mixed urban/rural catchments offers a path to reduction of environmental impacts. In this session, we seek submissions that explore the potential of combining hydrological forecasting, pollutant transport models, and monitoring systems to improve the understanding of the processes by which the landscape is altered on the short and medium time frames. Specifically, we seek submissions that describe work done in small mixed-use watersheds which illustrate ways of observing and forecasting water quality.
