The Grand Challenge of Sustainable Aviation: Uniting Atmospheric, Aerospace, and Environmental Sciences
Session ID#: 250779
Session Description:
Aviation is recognized as the most challenging transportation sector to increase efficiency, decrease dependence on traditional petroleum fuels, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to the nature of high-speed, long-distance flights. Government and industry stakeholders are coming together to accelerate production of drop-in, synthetic fuel from waste streams and renewable biomass resources, or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This session will provide an overview of the key issues facing sustainable aviation today, as well as efforts that are ongoing to understand and address the energy and environmental impacts. Bringing together atmospheric sciences, global environmental change, science and society, and other geophysics disciplines with aerospace expertise will support cross-disciplinary insights into the lifecycle emissions of aircraft propulsion systems and demonstrate how a community-driven effort is necessary to meet SAF goals and broader energy ambitions of the aviation industry.
