Advancing the Value Proposition of Inclusive Geoscience for Infrastructure Careers
Advancing the Value Proposition of Inclusive Geoscience for Infrastructure Careers
Session ID#: 251594
Session Description:
Geoscience students and practicing professionals alike face finding sustaining career opportunities while meeting societal needs amidst deep federal funding cuts for geoscience, academic and research programs. Mission critical public services (water, power, sewer, trash, transportation) are essential to life worldwide; they last forever. A strong demand remains for geoscience skills in infrastructure related industries. As in Reimagining STEM Workforce Development as a Braided River (EOS, April 2021) "...today's science careers look less like a structured pipeline and more like a collection of paths that change and adapt" to individual needs and evolving workplace demands. Professional societies, corporate partners, academia must commit to greater innovation in providing curricula and experiential opportunities supporting meaningful opportunities for the next generation of geoscientists. This interdisciplinary panel from private, public, academic and nonprofit sectors share candid opinions about inclusive workforce training prospects and career pathways where geoscience and infrastructure intersect.
