Reimagining universities as leaders in engaged research and education for, and with, all Americans
Reimagining universities as leaders in engaged research and education for, and with, all Americans
Session ID#: 251647
Session Description:
Research Universities, a driver of technology-induced prosperity and well-being, are disconnected from and unappreciated by many Americans. Renewing the social contract between science and society is critical to the continued well-being of all Americans and mission-critical for universities. Most favorably positioned to facilitate this renewal is the part of academia that focuses on engaged research, which “encourages the production and use of knowledge in active collaboration with partners, including policy makers, practitioners, and communities.” In June of 2024, a planning committee of the National Academies convened a 1.5-day workshop to bring together academic experts and expert stakeholders to explore the challenges and opportunities for engaged research. This panel will focus on the tensions and bright spots related to the infrastructure for engagement. After a brief presentation of the conference proceedings, panelists representing academic, philanthropic, non-profit, and public sectors will share their views on building durable infrastructures for engaged research.
