Scaling Enhanced Rock Weathering for CO₂ Removal in the (Sub-)Tropics: Innovations in MRV, Agronomy, and Community-Driven Deployment
Scaling Enhanced Rock Weathering for CO₂ Removal in the (Sub-)Tropics: Innovations in MRV, Agronomy, and Community-Driven Deployment
Session ID#: 251754
Session Description:
Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) continues to emerge as a critical geochemical carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathway with the potential to deliver durable and measurable climate and agronomic benefits. (Sub-)tropical regions – with their favorable climate and soil characteristics – offer a promising setting for accelerated silicate weathering, yet present distinct operational challenges. This session will focus on advancing ERW in the (sub)tropics by deepening the integration of robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks, geochemical modeling, assessment of co-benefits, and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). In particular, we welcome submissions that highlight novel approaches to (a) quantifying carbon sequestration across soil, water, and crop systems in both the near field and far field zones; (b) agronomic and environmental impacts including precision agriculture, microbial interactions, and the use of ERW as a multi-benefit climate solution; and community involvement such as farmer participation, multi-institutional collaboration, and community benefits.
