Recent Advances in Magnetic Reconnection in Space Plasmas: Theory, Modeling and Experiments
Session ID#: 252514
Session Description:
Magnetic reconnection converts stored magnetic energy into particle acceleration and heating in a number of space and astrophysical environments, which include planetary magnetospheres, the solar wind and corona, the interstellar medium, AGN jets. Notwithstanding decades of theoretical, numerical and experimental investigation, a number of questions are still open, such as: A) how do collisions (both Coulomb and collisions between charged and neutral particles) affect magnetic reconnection onset and reconnection rate? B) how do waves, instabilities, turbulence modify magnetic reconnection? C) what drives reconnection in the extremely different magnetic field geometries characterizing different environments? D) what determines energy partition between electrons and ions, and between the thermal and kinetic energy components? This session welcomes contributions that address the many open problems in magnetic reconnection. The session intends to honor the memory of Giovanni Lapenta, who drove many of the progresses in the field, and passed away in May 2024.
