Integrating Immersive Technologies with Human-Robot Interaction for Extraterrestrial Construction
Integrating Immersive Technologies with Human-Robot Interaction for Extraterrestrial Construction
Session ID#: 252574
Session Description:
Future human habitats, at the core of all international space programs, demand a highly adaptable workforce collaborating with intelligent machines in extreme environments. This session focuses on workforce development for extraterrestrial construction by integrating immersive technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) or extended reality (XR), and human-robot interaction (HRI). Drawing from interdisciplinary research, including outcomes of the NSF-funded project “Fostering Transferable Skills for Future-Ready Extraterrestrial Construction Workforce via an Intelligent-Immersive Training Environment”, we will explore innovative training frameworks that foster situational awareness and teleoperation skills. Meanwhile, digital twins, AI-driven adaptive learning, and immersive simulations, can address the pressing need for scalable, future-ready education and training for both terrestrial and extraterrestrial construction scenarios. We invite contributions on informatics, robotics, learning sciences, construction engineering, and workforce development. This session aligns with AGU’s mission to advance Earth and space sciences with cross-disciplinary solutions for the next generation of space infrastructure and workforce capabilities.
