Science, Contested: Community-based Science and Cumulative Impacts
Science, Contested: Community-based Science and Cumulative Impacts
Session ID#: 252788
Session Description:
Specific communities in the U.S. have long been overburdened by cumulative impacts from chemical and non-chemical stressors. Understanding and addressing cumulative impacts means developing assessments that account for multiple pollutants and various sources of burdens, including social-cultural factors. Scientists, researchers, and communities have successfully collaborated on new methods for selecting, implementing, and evaluating possible regulations to enact cumulative impact policies at the state and federal level. As current policy shifts create obstacles for addressing environmental injustices, cumulative impacts research and policy-making at the state and federal level are at risk. This session invites contributor teams of scientists and communities working together towards cumulative impact research, policy, and scientific methods. This session also invites case studies and analyses regarding the science around cumulative impacts and the political will to implement change at the state or federal level.
