Rifting to Ridging: Tectonic and Magmatic Processes at Divergent Plate Margins

Session Description:
A plethora of tectonic, magmatic, and geodynamic processes operate during rift evolution, from incipient continental rifting to sea-floor spreading. Recently, magmatic-tectonic episodes in regions such as Ethiopia (Fantale-Dofan, Hayli Gubbi) and Iceland (Reykjanes) have highlighted the societal impacts of plate divergence, while providing opportunities to observe extensional deformation in action. Furthermore, by liberating elements accumulated in continental lithosphere, rifts play a central role in affecting Earth’s surface chemistry. Understanding rifting processes is therefore essential not only for advancing fundamental geoscience but also for assessing the natural hazards, resource potential, and environmental impacts at extensional settings. In this session, we invite the rift, rifted margin, and ridge communities to share interdisciplinary advances on divergent plate margin processes, including models and analytical datasets. We especially encourage contributions that investigate the tectonic or magmatic kinematics, dynamics, hazards, resource potential, and other geoscientific aspects of extensional environments from petrological, geophysical, geochemical, or geodynamic perspectives.
