Climate Conditions and Natural Hazards: Impacts on Air Quality and Health

Session Description:
Climate and natural hazards affect humans and ecosystems alike, posing bidirectional impacts on air quality and health. The sources and effects of air pollution feature pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Pollutant types and concentrations exhibit spatial variability, ranging from broad regional patterns to highly localized characteristics. Climate conditions and natural hazards (e.g., wildfires and dust storms) exacerbate degraded air quality, and socioeconomic stressors also add to exposure and health burdens. To develop effective and inclusive solutions, it is imperative to quantify current and future concentrations of air pollutants and assess health-related consequences.

This session calls for studies from around the world that evaluate the impacts of climate and natural hazards on air quality and health through (1) climate and chemical transport models, (2) artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), (3) remote sensing and in situ measurements, (4) air pollutant source attribution, (5) exposure and epidemiological assessments, and/or (6) policy-relevant scenario analyses.
