Developments in Urban Greenhouse Gas Emissions Quantification

Session Description:
Research into quantifying urban greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has expanded significantly in recent years. Studies have focused on creating operational atmospheric inversion systems to directly provide policy-makers information at relevant time scales, including trends, for decision-making, using either in-situ networks or satellite observations. Others have focused on auxiliary measurements of multiple tracers and/or at smaller scales (e.g., driving past facilities) to better understand specific emissions sources and emission factors. We invite presentations addressing these and other related topics (e.g., analysis of GHG mitigation returns or related improvements in urban air quality) utilizing diverse measurements and models with resolutions ranging from a metropolitan area to individual buildings. Presentations may cover both top-down (i.e., using observations of atmospheric GHG concentrations) and bottom-up (activity and emission-factor based) methods. We encourage presentations on studies bridging the gap between different atmospheric and activity-based estimates.
