Frontiers and future of Biometeorology: Building on Dennis D Baldocchi’s “Physics wins, biology is how it’s done”

Session Description:
Paying the toll to the forebears, drawing visions in the flux of time. Modern Biometeorology reflects a generational convergence of observation, experimentation, and theory, weaving decades of trial-and-error into coherent understanding of biosphere-atmosphere interactions. Yet its lineage remains below the detection limit. From increasingly accessible eddy covariance flux data, these explain biophysical processes linking the biosphere and atmosphere, parameterize and validate models that, when combined with remote sensing, enable fluxes everywhere, all the time. But what does it take to calculate fluxes? What are the emerging topics, and what new tools advance them? Science is discovery in motion, fueled by curiosity over prestige, sometimes turbulent, but always becoming. In that vein, this session honors the roots of Biometeorology while casting a gaze toward the horizons ahead. The session seeks to inspire continued curiosity and resilience, and to illuminate pathways for budding biometeorologists in a rapidly changing scientific and environmental landscape.
