Biosphere–Atmosphere Interactions Across Scales: Emissions, Chemistry, and Responses to a Changing Earth

Session Description:
Biosphere–atmosphere interactions play a critical role in atmospheric chemistry, air quality, and climate across urban, regional, and global scales. The biosphere, encompassing both natural and managed ecosystems (e.g., agricultural systems and urban environments), influences the exchange of reactive trace gases (e.g., VOCs, NOx, and NH3), greenhouse gases (e.g., CH4 and N2O), and aerosols, which in turn interact with meteorology and affect pollutant formation, atmospheric oxidation capacity, and climate feedbacks. These exchanges vary across ecosystems and are further modulated by land use change, seasonal dynamics, and extreme weather events such as heatwaves, fires, drought and storms. This session focuses on how biosphere–atmosphere exchanges shape atmospheric chemistry and climate across diverse scales. We invite contributions that use field observations, laboratory experiments, remote sensing, numerical modeling, or machine learning approaches to investigate these processes, with the aim of improving our understanding of their implications for air quality, climate feedbacks, and environmental resilience.
