Compound Climate Hazards and Health Risks

Session Description:
Climate change is driving shifts in the spatiotemporal distribution of climate-related hazards, causing some regions to be exposed to new hazards, others to experience seasonal changes in existing hazards, and some to face multiple hazards simultaneously. While often examined separately, hazards that occur in the same place and/or time can cause synergistic impacts on the environment and society. This poses challenges for characterizing exposure(s), assessing population vulnerability, and anticipating health outcomes. This session explores the evolving landscape of climate-related hazards and their public health implications. We welcome contributions that examine multi-hazard risk of climate and extreme weather events—including spatially or temporally compounding, preconditioned, or multivariate —using observational data, modeling frameworks, or scenario-based analyses. We are particularly interested in research that characterizes these compound or cascading risks, assesses related health impacts, identifies vulnerable or newly exposed populations, and develops decision support tools or adaptation strategies for communities and policymakers.
