Fire Representations in Earth System Models and New Frontiers in Observations

Session Description:
Fire is a fundamental Earth system process, yet its representation in Earth system models (ESMs) remains among the most poorly constrained components. As fire regimes intensify globally, accurately capturing fire dynamics and their cascading consequences is urgently needed to improve ESM projections of carbon cycling, atmospheric chemistry, and land surface feedbacks. This session advances fire representation across the modeling hierarchy, from process-level parameterizations to full ESM integration and evaluation, alongside next-generation observational products. We invite contributions on: (1) ignition, fuel accumulation, fire spread, and post-fire vegetation feedbacks; (2) scale mismatches between grid-cell fire modules and local fire behavior; (3) land–atmosphere coupling including aerosols, albedo modification, and evapotranspiration; (4) human dimensions such as fire suppression and land-use interactions; and (5) multi-model benchmarking. On the observational side, we welcome satellite data, lidar, atmospheric inversions, and machine learning approaches. We particularly encourage contributions bridging ESM development and observational innovation through shared benchmarking frameworks.
