Coupled Human–Natural Water Systems in a Changing Climate: Bridging Observations, Models, and Impacts

Session Description:
From a global perspective, the Freshwater Challenge initiative (FWC) seeks to revitalize and safeguard water sources by restoring 300,000 kilometers of rivers and 350 million hectares of wetlands by 2030. The FWC encourages ambitious country commitments to restore and conserve freshwater ecosystems and inland waters, aligning with their objectives for sustainable development, climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and other related goals. For this session, we invite contributions related to the following areas:

  • Innovative approaches utilizing global earth observations from space to enhance local, regional, or transboundary efforts that assess natural resources for conservation and socio-economic water management in the context of climate change.
  • Studies on coupled human-natural systems that mitigate the impacts of extreme weather and climate events on water, energy, agricultural, or ecological systems.
  • Studies on interactive and collaborative approaches involving multiple actors, including policymakers, scientists, and local communities, within the coupled human-natural systems.
