Connections between Drinking Water Quality and Human Health: Understanding Contaminant Occurrence and Quantifying Health Impacts

Session Description:
The pursuit of safe drinking water faces multifaceted challenges, including regulated and emerging contaminants (e.g. arsenic, nitrate, microbes, PFAS, microplastics) in surface and groundwater, extreme weather events (e.g., drought, flooding), competing demands (e.g., water use by data centers), and socioeconomic disparities. These obstacles hinder universal access to clean water and can influence population health.  Understanding the drivers of contaminant occurrence, the environmental behavior, and effective treatment methods for contaminants in addition to the economic, human health, and environmental justice concerns can reduce disparities in access to safe and affordable drinking water.   We invite contributions that investigate the occurrence of contaminants in drinking water and/or source water and their implications for water availability, management, and human health.  This may include modeling, monitoring, mitigation, and intervention techniques; public health, environmental exposure, and environmental justice studies; and investigations that examine the impacts of drinking water exposure to contaminants on human health.
