Runoff Generation Processes: From Fundamental Mechanisms to Disturbance Responses

Session Description:
Understanding runoff generation mechanisms is fundamental to predicting floods, droughts, and how catchments respond to a changing environment. Yet the mechanisms and controls on rainfall-runoff processes remain one of the central challenges in catchment hydrology.

This session invites contributions that advance our understanding of runoff generation across a broad range of scales and approaches: from fundamental investigations of storage, flowpaths, and surface water connectivity, to the linkages between soil, rock, vegetation, and atmospheric forcing, to impacts on water resource availability and its quality. We welcome research that connects runoff generation to broader catchment responses to extremes, including floods, droughts, wildfires, permafrost and land-use change in a warming climate. Novel contributions in field observations, theoretical developments, conceptual and modeling frameworks, and data synthesis from ground-based and remote-sensing observations are all encouraged. Studies on individual catchments and plots, as well as synthesis studies across spatio-temporal scales, are all of interest.
