Ice-Ocean Interactions in High-Latitude Environments

Session Description:
Processes at the interface between ice sheets and ocean play a critical role in controlling the stability of upstream grounded ice. In Greenland, fjords regulate the exchange of oceanic heat and glacial meltwater at glacier termini. In Antarctica, ice-shelf collapse has been identified as a tipping point for rapid loss of grounded ice. Ocean processes, from the open ocean to the continental shelf and into fjords and ice-shelf cavities, set the conditions that govern ice-sheet response. These systems are shaped by freshwater inputs, icebergs, sea ice and ice mélange, all of which drive ice-ocean interactions that are not fully understood. They are also influenced by ecosystems and carbon cycling in marginal seas and interact with solid Earth processes. This session aims to bring together studies that advance our understanding of ice-ocean interactions from multidisciplinary perspectives, spanning observations, modeling, and theory across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales.
