This session examines how environmental shocks interact with spatial heterogeneity to shape agricultural system dynamics. It explores the mechanisms by which variability and extreme events propagate across biophysical, economic, and institutional landscapes, generating uneven impacts on productivity, risk exposure, and adaptive capacity. Emphasis is placed on how spatial differences in environmental and socioeconomic conditions drive variation in system sensitivity, resilience, and agricultural outcomes. The session welcomes empirical, modeling, and process-based contributions that trace causal pathways from environmental variability to observed agricultural change. By integrating perspectives from Earth system science, geography, and agricultural economics, this session aims to advance a unified, systems-level understanding of how environmental shocks alter agricultural performance, adaptation, and long-term trajectory.
