Collisionless Shocks in Heliospheric and Astrophysical Plasmas and their Effects on Particle Acceleration and Planetary Magnetospheres

Session ID#: 281377

Session Description:
Collisionless shock waves are ubiquitous across the universe, appearing in plasmas from planetary environments to supernovae. Upstream, a variable foreshock forms where waves and particles interact in complex ways, further complicated by transient structures such as foreshock bubbles and hot flow anomalies. Downstream, a turbulent sheath develops, hosting additional phenomena including high-speed jets. In the heliosphere, collisionless shocks include planetary bow shocks and interplanetary (IP) shocks, both central to particle acceleration and the production of solar energetic particles (SEPs). These shocks are studied using spacecraft near the Sun (Solar Orbiter, PSP), at L1 (IMAP, ACE, Wind, Aditya-L1, SOLAR-1), near Earth (MMS, THEMIS, Cluster), and at other planets (Cassini, Juno, MAVEN). Simulations, from local particle-in-cell to global hybrid models, have been key to understanding shock dynamics and acceleration processes. Despite significant progress, many questions remain unanswered. We welcome contributions on plasma processes at collisionless shocks and their effects on surrounding regions.
