Understanding Historic Trends in Environmental Pollution Through Proxy Records

Session Description:
Environmental contamination disrupts ecosystem conditions and may trigger both acute and chronic human health complications. This contamination may arise from the anthropogenic release or redistribution of natural elements (e.g. arsenic, mercury, carbon dioxide), as well as the introduction of persistent synthetic substances, including microplastics and PFAS, which resist biodegradation. While contemporary monitoring provides snapshots of current trends, reconstructing historical temporal and spatial variability remains essential for a comprehensive understanding of global change. This session invites contributions that utilize proxy records—such as sediment and ice cores, tree rings, and other natural archives—to elucidate the long-term history of environmental pollution from both natural and anthropogenic sources. We encourage presentations documenting new methodologies analyzing trends as well as the development of long-term datasets.
