Microplastics in the Atmosphere: Implications for Climate and Environmental Change

Session Description:
Microplastics are emerging as atmospheric contaminants with the capacity for long-range transport, enabling distribution across remote environments. As a result, atmospheric microplastics are increasingly recognized as a climate and environmental change component that interacts with physical, chemical, and biological systems at multiple scales. Despite growing awareness, knowledge gaps remain about the sources, transport pathways, transformation processes, and environmental impacts of airborne microplastics. This session aims to bring together interdisciplinary research that explores the feedback between atmospheric microplastics and global environmental change. Topics of interest include emission sources, atmospheric transport and deposition dynamics, physicochemical transformations and interactions with climate-relevant processes, including radiative forcing, cloud formation, and atmospheric chemistry. We also welcome contributions that investigate the effects of microplastics on ecosystem responses, biogeochemical cycles, and human exposure under changing environmental conditions. Studies employing field observations, laboratory experiments, modeling, and remote sensing are encouraged, particularly those addressing feedback mechanisms and large-scale environmental implications.
