Abrupt Changes in the North Atlantic Ocean Circulation: Past, Present, and Future

Session Description:
In the present-day climate, the subpolar North Atlantic is a key region for deep-water formation, a fundamental component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Global warming is projected to drive major changes in this region through altered heat and freshwater fluxes, stratification, and deep convection, with the potential for abrupt transitions or tipping in both the AMOC and subpolar gyre.

This session focuses on North Atlantic ocean and climate dynamics, from deep circulation to surface systems, across different timescales. We invite contributions from contemporary and palaeoceanography examining past, present, and future circulation change, particularly AMOC and subpolar gyre tipping, abrupt shifts in deep convection, and threshold behaviour in water-mass properties. We also welcome studies of interactions with other Earth system components, including the Greenland Ice Sheet and atmosphere. Contributions may use models, observations, or both, and may explore early warning indicators of abrupt change.
