Mesozoic Greenhouse Climates: Proxies, Models, and Climate Sensitivity

Session Description:
The Mesozoic Era represents a dynamic greenhouse interval, marked by frequent perturbations of the climate system. Proxy records reveal complex relationships between CO2 and temperature, including apparent intervals of decoupling between greenhouse forcing and climatic response that represent critical puzzles to solve if we are to understand long-term climate sensitivity and Earth system functioning under warm climates.

This session focuses on Mesozoic climate evolution using multi-proxy reconstructions of CO2, temperature, and seawater chemistry, alongside Earth system modelling. We look to showcase records across key intervals such as Triassic carbon isotope excursions, the End-Triassic Mass Extinction, Jurassic and Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events, the Cretaceous Temperature Maximum, and transient cooling episodes. We also welcome studies using non-traditional proxies tied to carbon cycling, weathering, and productivity.

By integrating geochemical, sedimentological, and modelling approaches, this session aims to constrain climate sensitivity and carbon-cycle dynamics in greenhouse climates and provide context for future climate change.
