Advances in Understanding Water-Energy-Carbon Interactions

Session Description:
The terrestrial biosphere's response to global environmental change depends on the coupling of water, energy, and carbon (W-E-C) cycles. The mechanisms linking these cycles — stomatal regulation, precipitation intermittency, humidity-soil moisture feedbacks, surface energy flux partitioning, plant diversity in water- and light-use efficiency, and land-cover heterogeneity — operate across temporal and spatial scales, complicating efforts to bridge plot-level process knowledge to regional and global patterns. This session highlights advances in characterizing W-E-C coupling pathways, compiling multi-scale datasets, and assessing the sensitivity of W-E-C interactions to future climates and land management. We welcome observational, experimental, theoretical, and modeling contributions spanning natural and managed landscapes, including but not limited to analyses of land water, energy, and carbon processes, land-atmosphere feedbacks, extreme events, and climate-smart land management strategies.
