Cultivating Usable Science with Lessons Learned from Climate Services

As natural hazards like hurricanes, drought, wildfire, flooding, and extreme heat increasingly impact all sectors of society, there is a growing need for communities, governments, and resource managers to more robustly plan for hazard resilience and recovery. The field of climate services emerged to meet this need, focusing on providing usable science to inform planning efforts. This session highlights science from researchers and climate services organizations that supports decision making to improve hazard resilience and recovery. Presentations will focus on dimensions of science usability and impact including: (1) The process of co-development and relationship building with communities or stakeholders (2) Strategies for balancing partner needs, data availability, capacity, and support (3) The benefits of co-developed products and research (4) Lessons learned for improving science usability. This session will be a forum for researchers who develop usable science to share best practices for improving science impacts through partner engagement and collaboration.
