The search for life beyond Earth is one of the most consequential scientific endeavors of our time—and how we communicate its results is as important as the results themselves. In recent years, the astrobiology community has critically examined how discoveries and data related to life detection are presented to both scientific peers and the public. This has included case study analyses, the development of standards of evidence to calibrate confidence in results, cross-disciplinary workshops with social scientists and communication experts, and initial steps toward protocols for announcing the unambiguous detection of extraterrestrial life. Collectively, these efforts have yielded lessons on responsible “discovery communications” and highlighted the need for shared best practices. This session invites abstracts presenting insights and outputs from these and related initiatives, with the aim of building community consensus and advancing responsible communication strategies for life detection research.
