End-of-Life Oil and Gas Wells: Identification, Characterizing Impacts, Mitigation, and Repurposing Opportunities

Session Description:
More than 4 million oil and gas wells exist in the United States, with millions more worldwide, ranging from active and marginal wells nearing the end of their economic life, to abandoned, orphaned, and undocumented wells. Collectively, these wells pose significant risks to human health and the environment. In the United States, substantial funding has been allocated through federal and state legislation, carbon credit markets, and non-governmental organizations to support monitoring, plugging, and repurposing programs.
This session invites submissions on the impacts of end-of-life oil and gas wells, mitigation strategies, and opportunities for well repurposing. Topics of interest include greenhouse gas emissions, air pollutants and health impacts, groundwater contamination, well integrity assessment, identification of undocumented wells, plugging and mitigation programs, and well repurposing efforts. We welcome contributions using field measurements, remote sensing, modeling, database analysis, as well as policy, regulatory or economic analyses and frameworks.
