Reactive Transport and Chemo-Mechanical Processes in Porous Media

Session Description:
Reactive transport and chemo-mechanical processes are central to a host of applications in geologic systems, including carbon storage or mineralization, geologic hydrogen production and storage, geothermal energy production, and nuclear waste disposal. Despite advancements in experimental and numerical techniques for evaluating complicated couplings under high temperatures and pressures typifying these environments, we lack comprehensive understanding of interconnections among distinct chemical, mechanical, and transport processes that govern our ability to inject, extract, or store fluids or waste in heterogeneous geologic reservoirs. This session welcomes experimental, theoretical, and numerical advances in coupled subsurface phenomena, with emphasis on geochemistry, reactive transport, chemo-mechanical couplings, and translation across scales. We particularly encourage contributions that:
- Demonstrate how microscopic processes (e.g., alterations at water-mineral interfaces, mineral precipitation, reaction-driven cracking, pressure solution) affect larger-scale behavior
- Closely couple experimental investigations with reactive transport simulations
- Improve our understanding of the interplay between complex geochemical, geomechanical, and/or hydraulic feedback mechanisms
