Linking Volcanic, Magmatic, and Hydrothermal Processes in Mid-Ocean Ridge and Submarine Rift Settings

Session Description:
Submarine mid-ocean ridge (MOR) and other rift volcano settings are among the most magmatically and hydrothermally active regions on Earth. Over the past seven decades, marine expeditions conducted at ever-improving observational scales have transformed our understanding of these environments. Increasing temporal and spatial resolution, advances in mapping technologies, improved eruption detection and response, sustained monitoring and observatory efforts, and new deep-submergence vehicle capabilities now reveal fine-scale connections among magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes throughout the volcano-tectonic cycle (i.e., precursory, syn-eruptive, and post-eruptive periods).   

 

This session invites contributions that highlight how these systems evolve through space and time, and how they influence the broader ocean, including recent advances in volcanology, geochemistry, petrology, geophysics, deep-submergence technologies, numerical modeling, laboratory analog studies, and predictive mapping that deepen our understanding of the coupled magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal dynamics of submarine rift and MOR systems and the underlying mantle.
