From Theory to Ocean: Field Trials for Assessing Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal

Session Description:
Achieving global climate goals requires both rapid emissions cuts and atmospheric carbon dioxide removal. The ocean’s outsized capacity for carbon storage has drawn increased attention to the growing field of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). mCDR encompasses a diverse suite of approaches, each requiring field-based validation to constrain estimates of additionality, assess storage permanence, and characterize biogeochemical and ecological responses from nearshore coastal systems to remote high-seas environments, and across timescales from days to decades. Field trials remain the indispensable bridge to robust, real-world parameterization. We welcome contributions across the full spectrum of topics related to mCDR fieldwork: highlighting field results; model-informed field design and data assimilation; permitting; and autonomous platform and sensor innovations for material delivery and impact assessment. Together, these contributions will help define scientific standards and operational pathways needed to responsibly evaluate mCDR research.
