Advancing Heliophysics and Space Weather Modeling Through Open Science

Session Description:
Numerical models are essential for advancing heliophysics research and operational space weather forecasting. They connect observations from widely separated regions of the heliosphere, enabling a coherent physical understanding. The U.S. Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics places models on equal footing with observations in advancing knowledge of the heliosphere. Today, many heliophysics and space weather models are available for open use through simulation service providers such as the Community Coordinated Modeling Center and the Virtual Space Weather Modeling Center, while an increasing number of simulation codes are also available as open-source for community development. This session will highlight the successes and challenges of open model access and community-driven model development. We invite contributions on scientific and operational outcomes enabled by simulation service providers and open code repositories, as well as innovative approaches to collaborative model improvements and space weather community modeling.
