New Insights into the Dynamics and Energetics of the Low and Middle Latitude Thermosphere-Ionosphere System

Session Description:
The thermosphere-ionosphere (T-I) system serves as a critical nexus where dynamics and energetics are governed by the complex interplay of solar radiation, magnetospheric forcing, and upward-propagating atmospheric waves. In recent years, our understanding of this coupled, complex, and highly variable system has advanced significantly, driven by a new generation of satellite missions, increasingly capable ground-based networks, and high-resolution whole atmosphere models. This session invites research exploring the T-I system’s response to both external drivers, such as solar radiation and geomagnetic activity, and internal drivers including upward propagating lower atmospheric waves and polar vortex variability. We specifically welcome studies on thermospheric composition, thermal structure, neutral winds, and ionospheric variability across diverse spatial and temporal scales. We also encourage contributions regarding Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) for future mission planning and investigations into observational uncertainties and data assimilation strategies.
