Mental Health Impacts of Climate Hazards: Risk, Recovery, and Resilience

Session Description:
Climate-related hazards are increasingly recognized as mental health stressors, with impacts arising through disaster exposure, compounding events, displacement, recovery, and chronic uncertainty. As climate extremes intensify, there is a growing need for hazard-informed research on how exposures including extreme heat, hurricanes, floods, drought, wildfire, smoke, and severe storms shape mental health risk at the population level. Research increasingly examines compound and cascading hazards, longer post-disaster recovery, and unequal burdens among vulnerable groups. This session invites interdisciplinary abstracts on the mental health dimensions of climate hazards, including trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, substance use, sleep disruption, climate distress, displacement, and recovery. We welcome studies of individual hazards, multi-hazard exposures, longitudinal recovery, surveillance, interventions, and resilience-building. Contributions may span epidemiology, geoscience, psychiatry, psychology, public health, emergency management, and community-engaged research. We encourage submissions focused on underrepresented populations. This session aims to advance actionable science on climate-related mental health risk, preparedness, adaptation, and resilience.
