Bridging Scales to Advance Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal

Session Description:
Ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) offers scalable opportunities to mitigate climate change while providing co-benefits such as reducing ocean acidification. However, quantifying its efficacy remains challenging due to complex interactions across spatial and temporal scales and among Earth’s reservoirs. This session invites contributions from across the mCDR research community, spanning diverse approaches and perspectives. A central goal is to advance the scientific and interdisciplinary foundation needed for robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) and responsible deployment of mCDR. We welcome abstracts that explore: 1) particle–seawater interactions and mineral dissolution kinetics; 2) results and verification from field experiments; 3) relevant biogeochemical feedbacks; 4) modeling efforts across scales; 5) policy, economic, and governance frameworks that shape the feasibility and societal impacts of mCDR. By drawing on diverse tools and perspectives, this session aims to identify critical knowledge gaps, promote collaboration, and support a more integrated understanding of mCDR.
