Advancing Wetland Biogeochemical and Ecohydrological Processes: Observations, Models, and Emerging Approaches

Session Description:
Despite covering only ~6% of the Earth’s surface, wetlands play a critical role in global biogeochemical and ecohydrological cycles. They store approximately one-third of global soil organic carbon, and their unique hydrologic conditions support active vegetation and microbial processes while driving land-atmosphere exchanges of multiple trace gases. Wetlands also regulate surface-groundwater exchanges, water storage, water quality, and regional water and energy fluxes. Given their significant influence on water availability and ecosystem health, it is crucial to better understand wetland biogeochemical and ecohydrological dynamics.

This section invites submissions on both observation- and modeling-based studies to advance understanding of inland and coastal wetland carbon, water, energy, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycles. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: eddy covariance and chamber fluxes; remote sensing; isotopic analyses; process-based modeling; machine/deep learning applications; agentic AI workflow; autonomous observational systems; atmospheric inversions; inventory models; causal inference; and other emerging approaches.
