Forest microclimates and land-atmosphere interactions for climate adaptation

Session Description:
Forest-based nature-based solutions are increasingly recognized for their contributions to climate mitigation and adaptation responses. Their effectiveness, however, depends not only on carbon storage and biodiversity outcomes, but also on how they regulate energy, water, and temperature at the land surface. This session examines how forests shape local climate through microclimate regulations, evapotranspiration, canopy-atmosphere coupling, and thermal buffering, and how these processes influence ecosystem function. We invite contributions that use Earth Observations, field measurements, experiments, and modeling to quantify the microclimatic and land-atmosphere effects of forest and reforestation across scales. Topics may include understory and near-surface microclimates, canopy structure and thermal dynamics, evapotranspiration, drought and heat stress, and approaches for scaling nature-based solutions using satellite, airborne, UAV, and in situ observations.
