Session Description:
This session will examine biochar as a multifunctional tool in organic and regenerative systems, focusing on its role in long-term carbon storage and climate mitigation. Produced through thermochemical conversion of biomass, biochar contains stable carbon that can persist in soils for decades to centuries, depending on production conditions and environmental factors.

We will explore the biochar response in organic soils, including uncertainties around priming and soil carbon dynamics, where evidence remains limited and largely context specific. The session will also highlight applications across diverse systems, including forest soils, urban environments, and wetland restoration, emphasizing both opportunities and current research gaps.

Positioned within broader carbon dioxide removal and carbon management strategies, this session will provide a system-level perspective on how biochar can contribute to climate-resilient land management and other ecosystem functions while identifying key areas for future research and application.
