Subduction and Accretion Dynamics: From Slab Tectonics to Terrane Assembly

Session Description:
Convergent margins are shaped by a wide range of interacting processes that operate across spatial and temporal scales, from upper mantle dynamics to lithospheric deformation and surface tectonics. This session invites contributions exploring the dynamics of subduction and accretion, including terrane tectonics, oceanic plateaus, slab tearing and breakoff, flat slabs, and the coupling among subducting plates, mantle flow, and overriding plate deformation. Contributions may also examine pre-collisional deformation, ophiolite obduction, orogenesis, and back-arc extension and magmatism. We welcome observational, analytical, experimental, and numerical and analog modelling studies that address how these processes influence the evolution of convergent margins through time. Contributions may focus on active or ancient systems and may include structural geology, geodynamics, seismology, petrology, geochemistry, and tectonic reconstructions. By bringing together studies across disciplines, this session aims to improve our understanding of the links between subduction dynamics, accretionary processes, and the formation and modification of the Earth’s crust.
