Session Description:
Permafrost at high latitudes and altitudes is undergoing rapid change due to atmospheric warming, with important implications for ecosystems, infrastructure, and community livelihoods. While the capacity to monitor the terrestrial cryosphere has expanded through open-access data, satellite-based Earth observations, and growing participation from local scientists and observers, integrating these diverse sources remains challenging due to incomplete records and gaps in perspectives.
This session invites researchers, Indigenous knowledge holders, local communities, and engineering practitioners to share case studies, observations, and applications for monitoring permafrost across scales, from in situ measurements to remote sensing and modeling approaches. We particularly encourage contributions that bridge different ways of observing and understanding permafrost, including community-based monitoring and place-based knowledge.
By highlighting diverse systems of knowledge production and sharing, the session aims to improve understanding of permafrost dynamics, support more comprehensive monitoring, and foster collaboration toward informed decision-making and context-relevant solutions.
